"The Knowlton-Pearson

Correspondence"

of the Lizzie Borden Collection

Frank Warren Knowlton and Edmund Lester Pearson Collection, aka “The Knowlton Pearson Correspondence"

DESCRIPTION

This archive is comprised of correspondence between librarian, book reviewer, and author Edmund Lester Pearson (1880-1937), and his former Harvard University classmate, Frank Warren Knowlton Sr. (1878-1932). The latter, a successful lawyer, was the son of Hosea Morrill Knowlton (1847-1902), who served as prosecuting attorney for Commonwealth of Massachusetts vs. Lizzie A. Borden.

HISTORICAL NOTE

The correspondence was prompted by Pearson’s desire to include an essay on the Borden case in a volume he was preparing on American murders. The author was stymied by the fact that very little information was then available on the case, and contacted Knowlton hoping to gain access to his late father’s material. The collection details the pursuits of the two, with Knowlton in correspondence with individuals he believed to have had additional information that would be useful to Pearson in his writings.

PROVENANCE

Frank Warren Knowlton Sr. (1878-1932); to his wife, née Isabelle Grady Riese (1882-1940); to their son, Frank Warren Knowlton Jr. (1912-2002); to the FRHS, 1989, Accession Number: 1989.056.
