Hosea Morrill Knowlton Collection, aka “The Knowlton Papers"

DESCRIPTION

This important archive is comprised of letters and documents from the personal files of District Attorney Hosea Morrill Knowlton (1847-1902), who served as prosecuting attorney in the case of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts vs. Lizzie A. Borden. Also included are trial exhibit photographs and a scrapbook of clippings compiled by Attorney Knowlton. It is the largest collection of primary source material on the Borden case to have surfaced to date.

HISTORICAL NOTE

The existence of this material was relatively unknown outside the Knowlton family. The author Edmund Lester Pearson (1880-1937) was granted access to a portion of the collection by Attorney Knowlton’s son, Frank Warren Knowlton, Sr. (1878-1932).

This collection was published in 1994 by the Fall River Historical Society as The Commonwealth of Massachusetts vs. Lizzie A Borden: The Knowlton Papers 1892-1893, edited by Michael Martins and Dennis A. Binette (ISBN 0-9641248-3-1).
