A Thanksgiving Feast
Peek inside of Mrs. Hezekiah Anthony Brayton’s (Caroline Elizabeth Slade) 1901 diary to see how her family celebrated Thanksgiving!
According to her entry, the family had “roast turkey with all the fixings”, a meal that would be right at home on today’s tables. We wonder if the meal included Caroline’s famous salad dressing, of which she habitually made enormous number of quarts for countless social events of the day.
One can only imagine the Thanksgiving festivities held at the Brayton home! Hezekiah and Caroline had nine surviving children in 1901, and all but one appears to have attended dinner – their daughter Margaret was away at college. It must have been a packed house with eight children, a son-in-law, and two grandsons gathered around the table!
Mrs. Brayton was a talented cook – in fact, the almond macaroons served to this day at FRHS functions are baked to her original recipe!
