Golden Bells
“The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there” -Clement Clarke Moore, 1823
This Tiny Tuesday makes a merry sound! These tiny gold bells adorn a late 19th century stocking, the only one in our collection. Christmas stockings were a commonplace tradition by the Victorian era, usually filled with small trinkets, fruits, or candy.
The red and blue felt stocking was handmade for Richard Curtis Brigham (1895-1974) by his two aunts in 1897. Richard would go on to marry Florence Cook (1899-2000), who would become a much beloved curator at the Fall River Historical Society!
