Ivory Checkers
Fancy a game of checkers for Tiny Tuesday!
Incredibly ornate, these red and black ivory checkers feature scenes of Chinese Court life, masterfully carved in deep relief. Likely Cantonese, the checkers and matching shakers (not pictured) date to approximately 1840 and can be used for a game of checkers or backgammon.
In 1862, the set was given as a wedding gift to Horatio (1834-1916) and Hannah Maria [Cole] Carpenter (1839-1919). The accompanying checker board is of Italian origin and is not part of the original set.
