McWhirr’s Update

| Projects

Work is progressing with our project documenting the history of R. A. McWhirr’s department store. Betty Prescott and Suzie Mills Shaw have wrapped up the first phase of the project, having recorded interviews with several individuals connected to the management of the store — interviews include family members descended from the three original “cash boys” who owned and operated the establishment for decades. Fascinating narrative.

They have ferreted out some interesting artifacts as well, including a volume of Stockholders Reports dating from 1949-1974, a volume of stockholder’s certificates covering 1893-1974, and  a journal of minutes of Directors’ Meetings, 1960-1970 — the minutes provide an inside look at store operations store in the final decades of its history.

The interviews have been transcribed by FRHS volunteer Nancy Teasdale — a very time consuming process and more appreciated than I can say.

Next up: Interviews with former employees.

The eldest thus far: a 90 year-old woman who worked in gloves and hosiery during her college years — her mother worked at McWhirr’s as well; and a gentleman of equal age who worked there in various capacities in the late 1940s.

Marc Munroe Dion’s article about the project in the Fall River Herald News last week resulted in great feedback and we have heard from several former employees — one as far away as Seattle. All are very enthusiastic and are willing to be interviewed. Thank you, Marc!

If you or anyone you know were employed at McWhirr’s and would like to take part in this oral history project please contact the FRHS to arrange an interview.
