Under the Window
This belated Tiny Tuesday embraces the Halloween spirit!
Published in 1879, “Under the Window” was the first major work of illustrator Kate Greenway (1846-1901). Showcased today is a poem where a witch beckons children to join her on a nighttime ride throughout the town!
Miss Greenway was a widely successful illustrator of children’s books during the late 19th century. Her first work features captivating illustrations accompanied by simple prose. “Under the Window” sold nearly 100,000 copies throughout America and Europe, a sizable feat!
This copy was given to Mary Durfee Brayton (1877-1889) while she attended the Maple Street School. Mary was the daughter of Hezekiah Anthony (1832-1908) and Caroline Elizabeth [Slade] Brayton (1847-1928). Sadly, Mary died at the age of 12 from scarlet fever.
