Hair Pin and Chain
As Tiny Tuesday shows, eyeglass chains are not just for Librarians!
This gold-filled hair pin and chain would be attached to a pair of Pince-nez eyeglasses, which did not have earpieces; instead, they stayed in place by pinching the bridge of the nose. Even though the glasses pinched the nose, extra precaution was needed to ensure that the wearer did not lose their spectacles.
To remedy the situation, one end of a chain was attached to the glasses and other end was attached to a hair pin, such as the one pictured. The pins could be simple in style, or more ornate. Other models included chains that were attached to hooks worn behind the ear, as well as long chains that could be worn around the neck. This hair pin and chain set dates to 1900 and was worn by Mrs. Ann Ross Ayre (1867-1936).
