A marvelous night for a Moondance with Tiny Tuesday!
This crescent moon shaped piece is constructed of heavy silver-finished pasteboard with gilded print and trim; a golden ribbon is attached to both ends of the moon. Unique in shape, this was a program for the Thalian Literary Circle, a literary club that existed in Fall River during the last quarter of the 19th century. The club took its name from Thalia, the Greek Muse of comedy and poetry!
Members of the club would read various excerpts from stories, poems, and plays; if possible, a musical piece was included in the agenda. Various subjects were covered throughout these meetings, such as the life and works of authors, and even the history of specific countries. Past programs had playful titles such as “Words of Wisdom” and “An Evening with Scott”. Though we do not know what the subject was for this meeting, a good time was certainly planned with charades, games, and musicals!
This program, along with more than two dozen others, were donated to the FRHS in 1941. They have been reassigned standard accession numbers and are in the process of being fully catalogued.
