What to Buy
Tiny Tuesday has its (shopping) list, and its checking it twice!
A fantastic little piece of ephemera, this 1900 Holiday Shopping List has an illustration of a “Gibson Girl” styled woman affixed to the front cover. The interior pages feature “What to Buy” lists for gentlemen, ladies, and even children, as well as extra pages to keep track of gift recipients. The back cover calls for customers to purchase their gifts early, lest they miss the best items.
This booklet was printed for C.E. Gifford & Co., a prominent Fall River jewelry store. First opening their doors in 1830 under Ellis Gifford (1809-1866), the store manufactured and repaired watches and sold jewelry and silver. After Ellis’ death, the company was placed into the care of his son, Charles Ellis Gifford (1842-1895). As wealth in Fall River grew, so did the demand for fine jewelry and accessories.
Operating as C.E. Gifford & Co., the jewelry store became the premier place in Fall River to purchase glistening jewels and gold or silver baubles. It’s no surprise that Gifford’s produced their own Holiday guide to help their customers select timeless gifts. The store, under the management of Charles’ nephew Ellis Gifford (1884-1968), continued to thrive until the 1928 fire, after which the store closed. C.E. Gifford & Co. left behind a 98-year legacy.
So, what are some of the must-have items from 1900?
Well, perhaps you know a gentleman who would appreciate cigar cases, signet rings, or a shaving mug. For the lady in your life, peruse a selection of lockets, scarf pins, or even a Bon Bon dish. And for the darling little ones, maybe a rattle, bib pins, or a silver cup.
In all likelihood, some of the items suggested in the list now reside at the FRHS.
