Birth Announcement from 1888
Sometimes a Tiny Tuesday artifact can be found in the place you least expect it!
This wee little envelope and card were found within the pages of a substantially sized family Bible. The pasteboard card measures 2 ¼” x 1 ¼”, with a beveled edge tipped with gold. Unlike our previous miniscule mailing, this note was never sent; this likely contributes to its pristine condition. Like the announcement for Alice L. Fish detailed in a previous post, this is a birth announcement for Harrison Sherman Manchester (1888 – 1934).
Harrison was born on December 23, 1888, to Edwin Franklin Manchester (1842 – 1900) and Abby Ellen [Sherman] Manchester (1845 – 1931). Born in Fall River, Harrison spent much of his life in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. In 1912, he married Edith Marinda Coggeshall (1889 – 1974) and the couple went on to have three children.
Along with announcing the baby’s name and weight (a healthy 8 lbs.!), the card also refers to a passage from the Book of John, chapter 3, verse 16 : “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son…”.
A loving sentiment for announcing the birth of a sweet little baby!
