Black Silk Bonnet
A two-for-one special!
Not only is it #tinytuesday, today is also #makeahatday.
To celebrate, here is a miniature black silk bonnet. It adorns the head of a dainty doll, dating to 1860. She is styled as a Quaker lady, wearing traditionally simple garments made of silk and cotton. Quaker garments had little to no adornment; as such, the toys belonging to Quaker children reflected the style. She even carries a grey silk purse! The doll’s head is made of bisque porcelain, including her teeth. The body is wooden, and the limbs are made of cloth.
The delicate doll belonged to Miss Abby Elizabeth Gifford (1855 – 1930). Miss Gifford was the daughter of Ellis Gifford (1809 – 1866) and Abbie Chase Gifford (1816 – 1895). She was a lifelong resident of Fall River, attended city schools and was involved in local clubs. Like her little doll, Abby E. Gifford was a Quaker.
Hats off to Tiny Tueday!
