Woodturning
Look no further than Tiny Tuesday for your next quarantine craft!
Woodturning was a popular pastime during the Victorian period. This miniature goblet with a captive ring was crafted from a block of black walnut and dates to the third quarter of the 19th century. The captive ring, and the process in which the entire piece was created, presented a puzzle to viewers!
The cup was carved by Fall River businessman Alexander Morton Wetherell (1858-1939). The FRHS recently acquired an important collection of manuscripts, portraits, and decorative arts that descended in the Wetherell family!
Mr. Wetherwell was a talented artist, as evidenced by this miniature cup and a few additional examples of his woodcarving. He was also an accomplished painter! A very fine oil-on-canvas still life painting of an arrangement of fruit on a tabletop was included in the collection, painted in the manner of the Fall River School.
