Queen Victoria Silk Ribbon
Welcome back Tiny Tuesday with a celebration fit for a queen!
This cream, grosgrain silk ribbon is embroidered with vibrant miniatures of the American and British flags. The pendant features an image of the British Empire’s Queen Victoria, printed on celluloid. The commemorative ribbon was undoubtedly produced for a Diamond Jubilee celebration by one of Fall River’s British based organizations in 1897.
On June 20, 1897, Queen Victoria celebrated 60 years on the throne! At the time, Victoria was the longest reigning monarch of the British Empire, a feat which would not be surpassed until Queen Elizabeth II in 2012. Victoria ascended the throne in 1837 at just 18 years old, faced with doubts of whether such a young woman could effectively rule one of the most powerful countries in 19th century Europe. However, Victoria would prove to be a successful ruler, reigning until her death on January 22, 1901. When her Diamond Jubilee arrived, numerous pieces were fashioned for sale such as ribbons, dishware, handkerchiefs, and other souvenirs.
The Fall River Historical Society has a large collection of commemorative pins and ribbons for various celebrations throughout the city, country and the world!
