1860s Valentine
A token of love from Tiny Tuesday!
This charming Valentine’s Day card dates approximately to the 1860s, and features this sentimental poem.
“To my Valentine.
Eyes that match the stars of night
Smiles serene as Lunar’s Light.
Form like some stray thing divine,
Who can match my valentine?”
The tradition of gifting Valentine’s Day cards gained popularity during the 1700s, as men and women handmade cards for loved ones. American entrepreneur Esther Allen Howland (1828-1904) sold the first mass-produced valentines during the 1840s, instigating a global tradition for centuries to come!
