This miniature goblet with a captive ring was crafted from a block of black walnut and dates to the third quarter of the 19th century. The captive ring, and the process in which the entire piece was created, presented a puzzle to viewers!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The cup was carved by Fall River businessman Alexander Morton Wetherell (1858-1939). The FRHS recently acquired an important collection of manuscripts, portraits, and decorative arts that descended in the Wetherell family!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Mr. Wetherwell was a talented artist, as evidenced by this miniature cup and a few additional examples of his woodcarving. He was also an accomplished painter!
