The medal was given by the Maryland Institute for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts, which was founded in 1826.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The Institute, now known as the Maryland Institute College of Art, is one of the oldest art colleges in the country. Exhibitions and awards centered around aspects of American manufacturing, hence the medal for linen goods.
