Mother of Pearl Dance Card
Save the last dance for Tiny Tuesday!
Delicate and feminine, this dance card is hand carved in mother-of-pearl. The front piece features a carved floral bouquet dyed for contrast. The piece dates to circa 1913 and was created by an unknown manufacturer, though it is likely French.
The leaves, where the names of prospective dance partners would be written, are made out of ivory. The names, written in pencil, would be erased and the leaves used for another event! To keep the dance cards readily available, they are attached to a gilt chain and ring, which the lady could wear.
This particular dance card belonged to Fall River socialite Margaret Buffum Baker (1893-1976) during her debut party in 1913! Margaret later married Madison Francis Welsh (1891-1991).
