{"id":65,"date":"2022-09-02T19:51:09","date_gmt":"2022-09-02T19:51:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lizzieborden.org\/TimeTravel\/?p=65"},"modified":"2022-09-02T19:51:09","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T19:51:09","slug":"calling-all-cooks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/TimeTravel\/2022\/09\/02\/calling-all-cooks\/","title":{"rendered":"Calling all cooks!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On March 30th, 1891, an \u201cImportant Institution Begins Its Work,\u201d exclaimed the <em>Fall River Daily Evening News<\/em>: \u201cThe Fall River Cooking School \u2026 opened in the Vermont Block, Pocasset street last evening with a class of twenty-two young ladies, most of whom are employed in the mills during the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An informational circular that was disseminated a few weeks prior to the school&#8217;s opening, stated \u201cthe school is open to all\u201d and \u201cthe main object of the school is to provide an inexpensive course of instruction for working-girls.\u201d Yet, if one desired \u201clessons in richer cooking\u201d it would be available for an extra fee, as well as demonstrations of the \u201cso-called \u2018Nurses\u2019 Course\u2019\u201d including, but not limited to, \u201cjellies, gruels, eggs, oysters, custards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Fall River Cooking School was seeking to emulate the objective and cooking styles of the Boston Cooking School. Tickets for ten lectures were priced at $4.00, a single ticket was fifty cents, and ten lessons in practice class were $8.00. Membership to the program could also be obtained and was encouraged if one had an interest in \u201cteaching young girls to make an attractive home\u201d by paying $1.50. Those in charge of pricing must have been blissfully unaware of the average wage of the demographic they were targeting because they were suggesting that this was an affordable course, but affordable, it was not.<\/p>\n<p>While opening day proved to be a huge success and \u201ca more attentive audience Miss Wills [graduate of the Boston Cooking School and instructor] could not desire\u201d rejoiced the Fall River Daily Evening News, the program was short lived.
