For Auld Lang Syne

All over the globe on December 31st, when the clock strikes midnight, we will be saying goodbye to 2022 and welcoming in 2023. In so doing, many of us have family traditions to ring in the new year – carrying change in your pocket to promote wealth, eating 12 grapes, or hanging onions on the front door. Traditions aside, what better way to do an “out with the old and in with the new” than with a calendar?

This 1906 calendar from the American Japan Tea Co. (c.1895-c.1938) is in absolutely stunning condition. The pages of the calendar show some aging but, the colors throughout the artwork are vibrant and rich – as if it was done yesterday. The level of detail on the flowers suggests that a swift breeze could float the petals right off the page. The children all look jubilant as if they are wishing us a Happy New Year.
