{"id":5197,"date":"2019-03-21T19:37:45","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T23:37:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lizzieborden.org\/CuratorsCorner\/?p=5197"},"modified":"2019-03-22T08:53:40","modified_gmt":"2019-03-22T12:53:40","slug":"a-network-to-fall-river-history-or-how-bette-helped-dede","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/2019\/03\/21\/a-network-to-fall-river-history-or-how-bette-helped-dede\/","title":{"rendered":"A Network to Fall River History or How \u201cBette\u201d Helped \u201cDede\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>It started with a telephone call on Tuesday morning. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The inquiry:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cDoes the historical society have a copy of the 1939 edition of the Academy of the Sacred Hearts Yearbook?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The answer:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cNo, unfortunately we do not have that edition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And the conversation started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In short, the woman making the inquiry was the daughter of Dolores \u201cDede\u201d (Falvey) McGreavy, a 1939 S.H.A. graduate \u2013 recently deceased at the age of 97 \u2013 and was hoping to locate a photograph of her mother, taken during her high school years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The yearbook, by the way, was aptly called <em>Ianua<\/em>, signifying one\u2019s passage in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The next step:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How could the FRHS help? Perhaps a plea via social media, specifically using the FRHS Facebook page. This has often proved a successful route of inquiry regarding requests for Fall River high school yearbooks in the past, so it was well worth a query.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fingers crossed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>It finished with a telephone call on Wednesday morning:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The message:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cHi, Michael \u2026 I have two copies of the 1939 S.H.A. yearbook \u2026 my mother [Mary Elizabeth \u201cBette\u201d (Eagan) Donnelly] was in that class.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Just a few hours later, one of those two copies of the yearbook in question was sitting on my desk, donated to the FRHS collection by Bette\u2019s family, and delivered by her son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The Class of 1939:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The dedication at the beginning of the 1939 <em>Ianua\u00a0<\/em>is replete with the wonderfully heady optimism \u2013 the naivet\u00e9 \u2013 of youth:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>For the time being our brief hour upon this stage of school life is at an end. We<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u00a0have had our entrances and exits. The scenes and the players have all grown <\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>dearly familiar to us. The acts, entr\u2019 actes, and off-stage business, each have special<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u00a0significance for us. Before the curtain falls, we would record for all time this little\u00a0<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>drama of our high school days, the wholesome comedy, schoolgirl tragedy and youthful <\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>romance, all of which will grow dearer to us as we strut upon the stage of life, in other\u00a0<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>scenes, with other players. To you, our audience readers, we offer this record and invite\u00a0<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>you to share with us the joys contained therein.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How little they could have known, those thirty-two young ladies in the Class of 1939, that their words would prove prophetic: The tumultuous political events brewing on the world stage would all too soon irrevocably impact their lives. Within a few months Europe would be torn apart by war; for the United States, December 7, 1941, was fast approaching on the horizon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSchool life\u201d was, undoubtedly, at an end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The thirty-two of 1939 would all feel the affects of conflict and become \u201cplayers\u201d in a world at war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And for some, \u201cYouthful romance\u201d was destined to become heart-wrenching \u201ctragedy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All too soon they were destined to \u201cstrut upon \u2026 the stage of life, in other scenes,\u201d far more dramatic than they could have ever realized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But they would persevere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They were members of The Greatest Generation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The irony of the story:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And what of classmates Dede \u2013 \u201cthe tiniest little Miss\u201d \u2013 and Bette \u2013 a \u201cclass beauty\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Were they chums, I wonder?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">High school yearbooks are most often arranged alphabetically, as was the case with the 1939 <em>Ianua<\/em>; the pages for Bette and Dede appear opposite each other, their photographs \u2013 both formal and candid \u2013 displayed side-by-side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And so it came to pass that they did live out their lives \u201cwith other players\u201d; after both made their last \u201ccurtain\u201d call \u2013 Bette in 1991 and Dede in 2018 \u2013 the daughter of the latter would seek the \u201crecord [of the] little drama of [their] high school days,\u201d a request fulfilled by the family of the former.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Indeed, this act has \u201cspecial significance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I like to think the two old classmates would be pleased with the outcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The motives of the story:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Oftentimes, one only need ask.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The FRHS is one of the city\u2019s most important resources and a network to Fall River history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And as loathe as I am to admit it, social media \u2013 specifically Facebook \u2013 can be a powerful thing when utilized to good purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It started with a telephone call on Tuesday morning.
