{"id":5161,"date":"2018-12-25T07:10:13","date_gmt":"2018-12-25T12:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lizzieborden.org\/CuratorsCorner\/?p=5161"},"modified":"2018-12-25T07:10:13","modified_gmt":"2018-12-25T12:10:13","slug":"lizzie-bordens-christmas-greetings-messages-from-december-25th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/2018\/12\/25\/lizzie-bordens-christmas-greetings-messages-from-december-25th\/","title":{"rendered":"Lizzie Borden\u2019s Christmas Greetings: Messages from December 25th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lizzie Borden was very much a product of her generation of well-heeled spinster ladies and, as such, was never one to forget a kindness; in the manner adopted by many of her contemporaries, she immediately acknowledged gifts, wasting no time in doing so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And so, on Christmas Day, 1917, our middle-aged woman of obvious means \u2013 flawlessly dressed and neatly coiffed \u2013 sat at her \u201cinlaid mahogany desk,\u201d selected a postcard illustrated with a Gibson-girl like lady sporting a monocle, dipped nib into ink, and penned a note to her friend, Mrs. Per Ture Eugen Thelen, n\u00e9e Amanda Persson (c.1875-1941) \u2013 affectionately called \u201cManda\u201d \u2013 to acknowledge the gifts she had received:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<em>My dear Manda, my best thanks are yours for the lovely towel and calendar. I was delighted with both. Hope you and the kiddies had a fine Christmas. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Love from L.A.B<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As was her custom, the postcard was inserted in an envelope \u2013 ensuring privacy \u2013 and the flap was ornamented with a holiday sticker featuring a bough of ribbon-tied holly.
