{"id":5053,"date":"2018-10-24T11:29:38","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T15:29:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lizzieborden.org\/CuratorsCorner\/?p=5053"},"modified":"2018-10-24T12:42:16","modified_gmt":"2018-10-24T16:42:16","slug":"a-mini-exhibit-gallery-and-the-great-fire-of-1928","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/2018\/10\/24\/a-mini-exhibit-gallery-and-the-great-fire-of-1928\/","title":{"rendered":"A \u201cMini-Exhibit\u201d Gallery and the Great Fire of 1928"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Plans are underway to convert the small \u2013 but not too small \u2013 center room on the east side of the second floor of the museum building for use as a gallery for Mini Exhibits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Change is a very good thing \u2013 static exhibits are not; they are a death knoll for any museum, and must be avoided.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We aim to change that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Of course, human nature is such that many people do not like change \u2013 instinctively, they fight it \u2013 but change is essential, prudent, and consequently a very good thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If the FHRS is to have a sustainable future and remain an integral part of the community, it has to encourage change, embrace it \u2013 steadfastly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But one must tread lightly \u2026 caution is paramount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Because the FRHS is both an historic house museum and a local history museum; as such, it is imperative to strike a balance between period room settings and exhibits pertaining to the many aspects of the history of Fall River and its multicultural people. The possibilities for topics are endless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, this is not an easy proposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One must be sympathetic to the remarkably well-preserved interior of the building and interpret it accordingly, at the same time presenting various exhibits and artifacts in gallery-like settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hence striking the proper balance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The FRHS collections contain a plethora of material in a wide variety of categories, making a display area for a \u201cMini-Exhibit\u201d Gallery, a much-needed addition \u2013 it offers the opportunity to present material not normally seen by the public in easily manageable small scale exhibits that can be changed frequently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The second floor room in question \u2013 it was a dressing room when the building was a private residence \u2013 currently houses an exhibit pertaining to 19<sup>th<\/sup> century mourning practices and, if truth be told, it is getting rather stale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fortunately, the transformation will be a fairly straightforward process and does not require extensive construction, but several steps need be accomplished to bring the project to fruition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">First up: Creating additional wall space &#8211; there is not much in the room at the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An easy fix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A false wall panel will be constructed and installed on the south wall, obscuring the door that currently dominates it \u2013 this will furnish ample space for hanging and\/or exhibition purposes. This will be addressed with the installation of lighting suited to exhibition purposes, and the application of UV- screening window film to the single window, located high on the east wall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now, the best part \u2013 at least as far as I see it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A flat screen will be mounted to the east wall, allowing for the presentation of brief, narrative and\/or interactive video presentations pertaining to the various exhibits on display.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For example: An exhibit about the disastrous 1928 Fire \u2013 it ravaged the heart of the city on a cold, February evening \u2013 could be accompanied by original film footage of the conflagration and its aftermath. The FRHS has the film, and this would be an ideal method of showcasing it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Below is a 2 minute, 38 second edit from the longer film.
