{"id":5040,"date":"2018-10-12T11:54:04","date_gmt":"2018-10-12T15:54:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lizzieborden.org\/CuratorsCorner\/?p=5040"},"modified":"2018-10-12T11:54:04","modified_gmt":"2018-10-12T15:54:04","slug":"a-haul-of-high-school-yearbooks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/2018\/10\/12\/a-haul-of-high-school-yearbooks\/","title":{"rendered":"A Haul of High School Yearbooks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">On the subject of Fall River high school yearbooks \u2013 specifically, acquiring them for the FRHS collection \u2013 I recently wrote: \u201cSometimes, one simply need ask.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Very true \u2026 and then some.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">The \u201cask\u201d went out a few months ago to a friend of the FRHS who happens to be a proud \u2013 and active \u2013 Prevost alumnus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">His \u201canswer\u201d \u2026 definitely in the affirmative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">His search began.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">It was rather a large cache \u2013 a haul, actually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Thirteen volumes: Ten yearbooks published by the senior class of Msgr. Prevost High School \u2013 a.k.a. \u201dPrevost\u201d \u2013 and, three, by the senior class at Jesus-Marie Academy \u2013 a.k.a. \u201cJMA.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">As an added bonus: Seven canisters of 16 millimeter film dating from 1936 to 1949.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lizzieborden.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20181012_095517.png\" rel='prettyPhoto'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5043\" src=\"https:\/\/lizzieborden.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20181012_095517-1024x680.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"518\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20181012_095517-1024x680.png 1024w, https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20181012_095517-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20181012_095517-768x510.png 768w, https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20181012_095517-860x571.png 860w, https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/20181012_095517.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nAccording to the typewritten labels, captured on film are various events of local interest, including: Prevost and JMA graduations; \u201cPrevost Misc.\u201d \u2013 wonder what that is \u2013 goings-on at Notre Dame Church; Fall River parades and picnics; and \u201cbaseball champs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">The film appears to have survived in good condition, likely due to having been stored in steel film canisters, fitted into a heavy steel storage case, with fitted compartments; extremely fragile, film is prone to disintegration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">As soon as the funds permit \u2013 always a lack of funding, alas \u2013 the film will be transferred to a more stable medium, in order to ensure its preservation. Imperative, that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Until then, a waiting game; eventually we can safely see what the flicks divulge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Of course it is tempting to put them on a projector and enjoy the show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Tempting \u2013 yes, very much so \u2013 but not prudent \u2026 the integrity of the film must be preserved until safely transferred. So, it is not possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Thus, we wait.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">There was also a chenille \u201cJM\u201d in its original glassine sleeve included with the collection, likely dating to the 1950s; destined for a sweater or jacket, it was never applied and remains in pristine condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Of the assortment of yearbooks, five copies were already represented in the collection \u2013 they will be retained as duplicate, backup copies. Backup copies are essential, especially with material used for research purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">The remaining eight?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">Well, we can strike those off the \u201cwant list.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">What years has the FRHS added to its ever-growing collection?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">The score for Prevost: 1954; 1955; 1956; 1957; 1958; 1959; and 1963.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\">For Jesus-Marie: 1958.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lizzieborden.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2yearbooks.png\" rel='prettyPhoto'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5042\" src=\"https:\/\/lizzieborden.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2yearbooks-886x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"901\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2yearbooks-886x1024.png 886w, https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2yearbooks-260x300.png 260w, https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2yearbooks-768x888.png 768w, https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2yearbooks-860x994.png 860w, https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2yearbooks.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe holdings of the <em>Charlton Library of Fall River History<\/em> at the FRHS are ever-growing, and include what I believe is the largest collection of Fall River high school yearbooks in the city \u2013 public and private \u2013 extant.
