{"id":4985,"date":"2018-08-31T14:37:03","date_gmt":"2018-08-31T18:37:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lizzieborden.org\/CuratorsCorner\/?p=4985"},"modified":"2018-08-31T14:37:03","modified_gmt":"2018-08-31T18:37:03","slug":"durfee-yearbooks-now-only-seven-sought-by-the-frhs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/2018\/08\/31\/durfee-yearbooks-now-only-seven-sought-by-the-frhs\/","title":{"rendered":"Durfee Yearbooks\u2014Now Only Seven Sought by the FRHS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I freely admit that I am not social media savvy\u2014I know the basics\u2014sort of\u2014and that is well enough for me.\u00a0 But I have become a firm believer\u2014a convert, I suppose\u2014of the benefits of social media, especially so when used for research purposes or, in this instance, to build library holdings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Case in point:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A message on the FRHS\u2019s Facebook page in response to my last posting on the subject of the FRHS\u2019s \u201cwant list\u201d of eight editions of the <em>Durfee Record<\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<em>I have 1941 in perfect condition with the Class Day Program. Please PM me.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And just like that, the <em>Durfee Record\u00a0<\/em>\u201cwant list\u201d went from eight volumes to seven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The donor\u2014a Rhode Island native, with Fall River ancestry\u2014read my blog posting via Facebook, thought about the sought-after volumes a bit, and checked her bookcase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Voil\u00e0.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There it was: Her late father-in-law\u2019s 1941 edition of the <em>Durfee Record<\/em>. A Fall River native, he moved to Tiverton, Rhode Island, in 1947, and his year book went with him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yesterday there was a follow-up telephone call\u2014very interesting conversation, though I fear I rambled\u2014and this afternoon the 1941 was added to the FRHS\u2019s collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thank you to the donor and her husband.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Amazing, how one thing leads to another. The donor\u2019s grandfather worked in the men\u2019s department at Fall River\u2019s iconic <em>R. A. McWhirr Company\u00a0<\/em>department store, her mother and her aunt were employed there, and she, of course, was a customer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With the FRHS currently in the process of documenting the history of <em>McWhirr\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>for exhibition and publication purposes, her personal and familial recollections of the store should make for a very interesting interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And all this due to social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So, regarding the <em>Durfee Record<\/em>, we are now down to seven: 1913; 1914; 1951; 1952; 1953; 1954; and 1976.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you are reading this, have a Fall River\/B.M.C.
