{"id":4980,"date":"2018-08-28T07:49:11","date_gmt":"2018-08-28T11:49:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lizzieborden.org\/CuratorsCorner\/?p=4980"},"modified":"2018-08-28T09:07:41","modified_gmt":"2018-08-28T13:07:41","slug":"durfee-yearbooks-eight-sought-by-the-frhs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/2018\/08\/28\/durfee-yearbooks-eight-sought-by-the-frhs\/","title":{"rendered":"Durfee Yearbooks\u2014Eight Sought by the FRHS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The box\u2014not very large, but large enough\u2014began its journey to the FRHS dispatched from Newmarket, Ontario, Canada\u2014though in point of fact, the contents left Fall River decades ago and were, in a sense, coming home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Printed on the Customs Declaration: \u201cOld Yearbooks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An attention-grabbing inscription, that, especially because there has been rather a concerted effort on the part of the FRHS to build its collection of Fall River high school yearbooks\u2014public and parochial\u2014and to complete the run of volumes from B.M.C. Durfee High School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As such, I was eager to open the box\u2014rather surprising because I am not a person particularly disposed to opening boxes, usually leaving that to anyone else so inclined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this case, my eagerness was rewarded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Very much so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In my last posting on the subject I mentioned that the FRHS was lacking nine editions of the <em>Durfee Record\u00a0<\/em>in its library\u20141913; 1914; 1920; 1941; 1951; 1952; 1953; 1954; and 1976.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thanks to the box sent from Canada, we are now down to eight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In addition to the \u201cOld Yearbooks\u201d mentioned on the customs sheet\u2014there were four of those, two out-of-field, and one already represented in the collection\u2014the box contained an assortment of material pertinent to Fall River history, including souvenir booklets, postcards, newspaper clippings of various sorts, and snapshots of the Fall River Line steamers <em>Pilgrim\u00a0<\/em>and <em>Commonwealth<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Enveloped in a protective layer of bubble wrap: a miniature art-nouveau-style souvenir vase, circa early 20<sup>th<\/sup>century, depicting the \u201cLibrary, Fall River, Mass.\u201d The FRHS collection contains a large selection of souvenir china, and fortunately, this particular example was not already represented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There was a note from the donor:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<em>I hated to throw these things out in case they could be useful to you. They belonged to my great aunt, my mother\u2019s sister. They were brought up in Fall River. If you can\u2019t use these items, I leave it to you to dispose of them. I visited the lovely house on Rock St. about 30 years ago and liked it very much<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yes, \u201cthese things\u201d are \u201cuseful\u201d to the FRHS\u2014especially one item in particular, a single volume that the FRHS had been coveting \u2026 for quite some time, actually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The item in question?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The 1920 edition of the <em>Durfee Record<\/em>, one of the nine volumes needed to complete the FRHS\u2019s run of Durfee yearbooks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eureka!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The thrill of the acquisition\u2014scratching another volume off the list \u2014can be very rewarding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many sincere thanks go out to our Canadian benefactor\u2014your foresight and thoughtfulness is much appreciated!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So, now the FRHS <em>Durfee Record\u00a0<\/em>\u201cwant list\u201d is down to eight volumes: 1913; 1914; 1941; 1951; 1952; 1953; 1954; and 1976.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The countdown continues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Can anyone help?<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The box\u2014not very large, but large enough\u2014began its journey to the FRHS dispatched from Newmarket, Ontario, Canada\u2014though in point of fact, the contents left Fall River decades ago and were, in a sense, coming home.
