{"id":4942,"date":"2018-07-13T18:01:12","date_gmt":"2018-07-13T22:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lizzieborden.org\/CuratorsCorner\/?p=4942"},"modified":"2018-08-28T07:40:25","modified_gmt":"2018-08-28T11:40:25","slug":"yearbooks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fallriverhistorical.org\/CuratorsCorner\/2018\/07\/13\/yearbooks\/","title":{"rendered":"Yearbooks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The FRHS maintains a large collection of Fall River high school memorabilia \u2013 public and parochial \u2013 including ever-popular yearbooks, made available to researchers visiting the Charlton Library of Fall River History.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In fact, they are used by patrons much more often than one would think, especially by people looking for photographs of various individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Among them is a nearly complete set of B.M.C. Durfee High School yearbooks, beginning with the first <em>Durfee Record<\/em>, published in 1912. There are a few gaps in the collection \u2013 now one less, thanks to the recent donation of a 1948 Durfee yearbook, just sent to the FRHS from Easley, South Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Along with it was a Durfee pennant, circa 1947. It is made from heavy wool felt, and has survived in a fine state of preservation, with minimal damage \u2013 insect or otherwise \u2013 remarkable considering it spent decades stapled to a garage wall; staples were still in place when it arrived.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In order to complete the <em>Durfee Record\u00a0<\/em>collection, the FRHS is currently seeking to acquire the following editions: 1913; 1914; 1920; 1941; 1943; 1951; 1952; 1953; 1954; and 1976.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If anyone has any of them, or knows someone who does \u2013 and is willing to part with them \u2013 please let me know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were several parochial high schools in Fall River, and those yearbooks are also represented in the FRHS collections, albeit with several gaps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For example, whereas the FRHS has a nearly complete set of the Dominican Academy\u2019s <em>Dominilogue, <\/em>there is, surprisingly, only one yearbook from Bishop Connolly High School, <em>Opus 70<\/em>\u2013 the first edition, published in 1970.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The collection contains copies of <em>Echo<\/em>, <em>Juana<\/em>, <em>Mercycrest<\/em>, <em>Prevost<\/em>, <em>Distaff<\/em>, and <em>Artisan<\/em>, and others with similarly florid titles, all published by graduating classes in Fall River \u2026 but gaps remain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The FRHS library holds the largest and most significant collection of archival material pertaining to the history of Fall River extant, and fortunately, it is ever-growing. Yearbooks \u2013 mundane publications to some \u2013 are important historical records and should not be overlooked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If anyone has yearbooks languishing on shelves or stored in attics \u2013 or worse yet, damp basements \u2013 that are not represented in the FRHS collection, we would be happy to take them off your hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Of course many people are loathe to part with them \u2013 sentimental attachments to their high school days, I suppose.
